NEA on High Alert as Post-Typhoon Recovery Continues Amide Threat of Severe Tropical storm Uwan
The National Electrification Administration (NEA) ordered all electric cooperatives (ECs) under its supervision to intensify their disaster preparedness measures in anticipation of the approaching Severe Tropical Storm ‘Uwan,’ known overseas as ‘Fung-wong.’
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) on Friday, 07 November 2025, reported that ‘Uwan’ has officially entered the country, with tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 raised in areas previously battered by Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi).
NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda advised all ECs—particularly those in Western, Central and Eastern Visayas—to remain on high alert, as power restoration efforts continue in their respective service areas.
“We cannot afford to be complacent,” Administrator Almeda emphasized. “Once electric cooperatives in the Visayas reach around 95 to 97 percent restoration in their coverage areas, they are expected to mobilize resources and assist other ECs that may be severely affected by Uwan,” he said.
Administrator Almeda reminded all stakeholders in the rural electrification sector that their collective strength lies in solidarity and swift response. He acknowledged that survivors of Typhoon Tino cannot afford to live in prolonged periods of darkness while recovering from recent calamities.
Weather forecasters earlier warned that ‘Uwan’ may escalate into a super typhoon capable of unleashing unprecedented rainfall and destructive winds. This scenario, therefore, demands heightened vigilance, coordination, and preparedness.
In line with this directive, NEA is reinforcing its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management protocols, ensuring the readiness of Quick Response Teams, emergency equipment, and restoration materials to minimize power disruptions and expedite recovery operations.
The NEA is working closely with the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), and local government units (LGUs) to synchronize response efforts and uphold public safety.
Administrator Almeda also appealed to the public for understanding and cooperation, reminding communities to observe safety precautions and immediately report power line damages or electrical hazards to their respective power utilities.
“Our foremost priority is the safety of our lineworkers and the public,” he said. “The NEA and the electric cooperatives stand ready to confront this new challenge with unity, vigilance, and service to our member-consumer-owners.”###
