BRACING FOR FUNG- WONG | Isabela on alert as tropical cyclone outside PAR may strengthen into super typhoon
The province of Isabela is on heightened alert for the possible impact of Tropical Cyclone “Fung-Wong,” which may intensify into a super typhoon over the weekend, as directed by Governor Rodito T. Albano.
During a pre-disaster risk assessment meeting held Friday at the Isabela Emergency Operations Center, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Atty. Constante A. Foronda Jr. explained that the cyclone’s diameter is so wide it could cover almost the entire Philippines.
Chief Meteorologist Ramil Tuppil of DOST-PAGASA Echague warned that the tropical cyclone may develop into a super typhoon within the next 24 to 36 hours and could bring over 200 millimeters of rainfall, posing serious risks of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) assured that the province has adequate relief supplies on standby. A total of 4,903 family food packs are currently stored in the provincial warehouse and are ready for augmentation to local government units (LGUs) should their own supplies run out.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has also prepositioned 32,357 family food packs across the province’s cities and municipalities, enough to sustain affected families for up to two days.
From the National Irrigation Administration–Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MARIIS), Engr. Calvin Rabiles reported that Magat Dam has begun pre-releasing water in anticipation of heavy inflows from the expected rainfall of up to 200 millimeters.
Present during the meeting were Vice Governor Kiko Dy, Provincial Administrator Atty. Christopher Mamauag, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)–Isabela Provincial Director Engr. Corazon Toribio, representatives from the Provincial Government of Isabela (PGI) departments, and officials from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and ISELCO II.
